Aircon hp pipe split today!! check your lines heads up to prevent failure!!

Post by kjb1 » Tue Jun 24, 2014 7:36 pm

Well as title states.  Started the car today, and thought it was smoke billowing out from under the bonnet!! closer inspection revealed ( once pressure had died down ) that it was the aircon line ( i only re-gassed 3 weeks ago!!!!! ) that has been split by what looks like a poor design!! check your lines guys and put something underneath to support it.  The pipe has rubbed on a bare edge of body work and cut through causing instant failure of the line over no doubt a long period of time!! Phoned dealer, its £90 ( with dealer discount as good friend  works there. ).  Should have been £102!!!!! rip off!! but on back order world wide lol so delivery is 6 weeks!! here is a pic:

if you look its the line which has a flexi pipe in middle of it via a high pressure crimp, its been rubbed by the thin metal body plate bare edge underneath, located on left hand side of engine bay as you look at it.

Nasty, and not something I've seen anyone on any forum I read report as a problem.  Glad no one was hurt and it's no worse!!

It could be incorrect fitting or damage caused to the pipe during a service (by perhaps a techie leaning where they shouldn't?) putting it too close to the metal underneath.  It may be that when 'correctly' installed there is no issue.  I would certainly have expected that there would be an air gap below any high pressure line - if that is anyone at BMW thought to check..... ;)

Can anywhere else supply?  Just thought you might need the fuses pulled to prevent compressor damage?  They are VERY expensive.. :'(

Ive knocked the compressor off straight away! its just bled away as pressure has decayed.  Its clearly a recognised issue as a backlog world wide for part being 6 weeks means its clearly in demand.  Check your lines with aircon on and engine running to check for vibration etc.

current calling breakers!!!

Try taking the hose off and going to your local hydraulic hose repairers. They will probably make you one up. :)
