Is it normal for the x5
When selecting D or R there seems to be a delay of about 2 seconds before it engages and car starts to pull.dont know if this is right or not but the signum auto we had before was instant.

Sounds right. You have to wait for the selectors and valves to change and re-engage the drive . My E53, E71 (and Škoda) autos are all the same. Some boxes may use D2 for both D & R by adding/removing a gear setting on one of the brake bands and one has to release to allow for the other. Just a theory though.
Might even be the changeover servos as they fade one out as the other is faded in - there is a term that I can’t remember at present for how the clutches cross-over from one to another.
