Oil grade for higher mileage cars
Does anyone use a slightly different oil, ( viscosity ), from what is recommended for higher mileage X5's, and have you noticed any difference.

150+ k on my 4.6 still on 5-30 grade as recommended but I do have a pre-oiler fitted. I do remember reading some M cars run 5-40 it is also on the recommended oils list but I have no experience of whether it will help or hinder.

Re: Oil grade for higher mileage cars
I put 5-w-40 in mine as the oil light started to flicker after coming of the motorway and sitting at the lights.
Turned out it was the oil pressure sensor but i put the same in it last oil change but i don't know why as it ran sweet on 5-w-30 at 168k.
Can't say i noticed any difference to be honest.

I use either 5w-30 or 5w-40 as tbh either is fine even on mine at 178k now.
