My understanding is that the N57 diesel engine isn’t fitted with Vanos. There are no parts referring to such in the parts database. I thought Vanos was only used on petrol engines. What are you looking at that is telling you your engine does have Vanos fitted?

Came across this on net
Diesel Engines:
While many BMW engines, especially gasoline engines, have VANOS, it's also present in some diesel models like the 40d, according to a BMW website.

It may depend upon which ‘40d’ equipped car they refer too. No mention on N57 or B57 (the later engine) for the X5 or X6. The M57 engine didn’t have it either. I’m not clear what purpose it would serve on a diesel as it’s compression ignition not spark. BMW use injection pulse control to adapt power levels to throttle demand and engine load. Given there’s naff all clearance between valve and piston crown on a diesel, having one still open at the wrong point would be catastrophic.
