My 2001 4.4 obviously is a V8 and has the quad tailpipes. It sounded ok but I’ve been after more of a deeper V8 burble for years and I’ve always preferred the gigantic ovals on the 4.6 and 4.8 (even tho they are still quad).
Bingo! Managed to pick up a set of back boxes from a 4.8is at a bargain price last month close to my location. That’s patience for you - waited years..
Anyway, the cars been at my local garage today to have them retrofitted (they are not a straight swap) and for a total price including the exhausts of £240 I now have a proper V8 rumble.
I highly recommend having it done if you have the means. My car now sounds like it should have all along. It’s not intrusive or over loud but more of a low burble and a low V8 hammer noise when gently pressing the accelerator. Well chuffed.
If anyone has a 3.0i or 3.0d then my old ones are on eBay and will fit with minimal work and make the rear end look better (especially the 3.0i with the daft droopy pipes) and I would imagine sound better. Item number 226920579013.
Don’t say “this thread is useless without video or pictures” as I can’t be bothered to upload any soz.

Glad your patience has been rewarded and that it was worth the wait
I also suspect many of us know what the tailpipes look like, so ‘I’ll resist
PVR was always ribbing those of us with E70 or E71 with round tailpipes as he thought they were only used as wheelbarrow handle points! There is a square set available from BMW, but for silly money. Surprise, surprise.

We're all different, i really liked the M4 type quad pipes on mine, the burble from them was also pretty good.
A nice 3" plus round pipe tip makes a statement too, imo

I fitted a set of Eisenman V8 pipes to my 4.4 v8, they sound great.

I did see/hear an e53 only this week with 4 pipes and I'm guessing it was a v8 and they do sound good , that thing must be incredibly rare over here in Norn Iron where diesel is king .

It's addictive. I don't even have the radio on now. I'll have to get the CEO to drive it so I can hear it go off down the road.
If I drive with the windows up it doesn't sound any different than before. And the average MPG has gone up but I'm going to monitor that really carefully over the next few weeks as I'm off to Carfest south this coming weekend so a few miles will be covered.
Talking of Carfest - when I was last there I spotted an E53 that was being used by a drone company that monitors the traffic. I had a chat with the guy and it was a diesel model but had quad pipe exhaust on it and it sounded really nice. And it was a rare colour, sort of dark purple / grey. I digress..
