Whine from the rear, could it be tires?

Post by RenoHuskerDu » Sat May 10, 2014 1:50 pm

I drove a nice 40d in Munich yesterday which has all the options I want on it except running boards. The adaptive cruise control is just the ticket for French freeways where nobody taught them about maintaining a safe distance and steady speed.

BUT, I hear a whine coming from the back. It does not sound like gear whine to me. It sounds like tires, and in fact the rears are down to about only 25% left. I told the dealer that if they replace the tires and the whine is gone, I'll bid on the car.  The tires are Continental SUV 18" that seems to be common in Germany. Two other E70s on the lot had the same tires on them.  I suspect that BMW puts them on when they refurbish cars that come off lease.

Has anybody had a problem with wearing tires in the back causing a noise that could be mistaken for gear whine? The noise varies linearly with speed.

The drive to Munich and back was interesting as usual. France is full of clunkers and little crapboxes that curl my hair. Switzerland has much nicer cars including some amazing Euro and even American iron, but most driven at only 10 over the speed limit. Deutschland OTOH is a feast for the eyes when the road is clear, as the Germans blast by at 140+ often. I even saw a beautiful Alpina B12 E38 that made our car rock as he swept by at 150 or more.

Not noticed any 'whine' from my X6 40d on 20" wheels & tyres.  They have 4mm left.

Could be a rear diff issue?

Could be a rear diff noise, indeed, or even a rear wheel bearing. That's why I want them to put on new tires before I agree to buy it.

FWIW this vehicle is still not sold, and the dealer has dropped the price twice. It's about £6k under market value but still no buyers. Methinks it does indeed have rear gear whine, and I'm not interested anymore!  :'(
