E70 wheel alignment

Hi, I have an E70 with sports suspension and 20's and wondered if the usual problems of outer front and inner rear tyre wear is normal even when the alignment is within BMW's specification?.

I am in the process of choosing some new non runflat tyres, for around £700 I can get Falkens, Toyo's, Hankooks, Vedesteins etc.
I would like to try the new Michelin latitude Sport 3 SUV tyre but at another £250 a set they  would probably be wasted if they get scrubbed out on the edges like the Bridgestone's have in the past.

Any views on this will be greatly appreciated.

Over 40 views now and no comments so far??.
I am getting all 4 wheels checked probably at the wheel alignment centre in Southampton before the new tyres go on and all I want to know is will I be waisting my money getting the more expensive Michelins if our car does the same again wearing the edges?.

The wear on the inside of the tyres is pretty much 'standard' form due to the way BMW set the geometry up on the X5s I'm afraid.

They need to camber to make the big ol' trucks handle!

I've just had a fully geometry setup done on my msport and the camber on the wheels is very noticeable!  Personally I can't wait for the dullers to get lunched so I can change to non-RFTs!

[/quote]Have you had your car long?, what sort of mileage should I expect to get if all the geometry is kept within spec?, our car is the family bus so the wife doesn't drive it hard

I've not had my car long enough to confidently predict the kind of mileage you may get I'm afraid.

I'd personally expect to see 10k out of a set of tyres on a car with a fresh wheel alignment.

I took my car back to have the alignment re-checked yesterday (when you have you car aligned they say to pop back after a few weeks for a recheck), all is still as it should be.

For reference I also have posted on the Xoutpost forum and one guy got 32k on his first E70 and then 40k on the second a 2012 model. Both cars were run on Michelin latitudes tyres and he always had the alignment set to the better end of the specification range, I will have to ask if he is running 20's.

I've had my 40d from new and my fronts wore on the outside to the point where the lower layer of rubber was starting to show through. Thus I had to change them. The outer edge aside the rest of the tyre was about half worn. Bloody waste of a tyre. I had the alignment all checked and it was ALL as per BMW suggests it should be. That was after 12,000 miles. Rears are wearing perfectly accross the board.
I was going to remonstrate with bmw but cant see it resulting in anything changing. The tyres were the Dunlop sportmaxx runflats.
Given the huge amounts of grip offered by extra wide tyres on our cars, I think its a bit of a false economy going for michelins. I don't like them myself, far too expensive and I dont rate them. I used to have them on my last X5 but when they wore out I went for yokahama's advans and they were much better and better wearing. Each to their own I guess.
The point of the reply, is that yes, outer front tyre wear is an issue. Car is driven by my Mrs so its not raced around.
Its frustrating, but I replaced with the same Dunlop's and at the moment it seems 2 for one in the wear stakes, as in fronts will do 12,000 miles and rears about 24,000 at current guesstimates.
Mid range brand of tyres seems the way to go in the replace more often/price/grip/wear index.

It might be worth asking what his settings are, Camber, castor, toe etc... Did the garage give him a before and after sheet with the settings on..

[/quote]He said the following:- X5 spec in the US for toe was 0.00 to 0.08 per wheel with 0.00 to 0.16 cross toe, at 0.08 you will get around 15k miles. at 0.01 you will get 40k.

My 2012 has 27k currently on original tyres - probs get another 2-3 k out of them before I hit 2mm.  Im surprised As have a heavy right foot!!

Do you guys have adaptive drive?, just wondered if the suspension was set softer and the camber was also different on these cars.

Nope just standard I drive.  Not exactly sure what adaptive drive is?

It's an adjustable suspension system.
