Absolutely no need to change it now - fully re-conditioned example thamks to BMW UK!
X5 will be the touring holiday vehicle due to 2 kids, bikes, luggage, comfort etc etc. The 1M will be stretching its legs on a trip to the Nurburgring at some point this year....

Just had my front propshaft replaced too. Considering there has been a recall on that part since at least last Summer, you would have thought that someone would have asked the obvious question....you know the one I mean "Has anyone checked the front propshaft bearings & joints?"

Hi guys, long time no speak! My car is coming up to 3 years, so am now looking at the same. Does this propshaft recall apply to the E70 or just the 71? Would also be interested in views on extending the warranty with BMW vs third party providers vs risking it!

Good to be back! What was that on - you sold the X5 ages ago and defected!? What term extension makes most sense?

We extended with BMW too. Various levels of cover from single item to full cover with UK and European breakdown assist.
Full cover varies in price dependent on excess you choose - £0, £100 or £250. From memory with the £250 excess 12 month full cover for the X40D was about £790

1. Recall applies to all E70 & E71 models made between April and November 2010. BMW have been able to call it a 'quality recall' rather than a safety recall in the UK so you need to call your Dealer. Yours must be outside that build timeframe?
2. I went with the BMW Warranty as it seems to cover more than any of the other after market options. Warranty Direct were OK except if a lot of diagnosis work, that wasn't covered, only the actual repair. I saw some horror stories about Warranty Wise which were enough to push me away from them. The BMW warranty isn't cheap, but then I don't have the spare funds to pick up a large diagnostic/repair bill at present. I went with their Comprehensive cover.
3. Good to see you're still about....

Many thanks for the feedback - much appreciated! Pretty expensive, and no doubt becomes more so for future years. Tempting to risk it, but maybe not!

Got the X5 back fro the dealers yesterday after 16 weeks this time around!
Good points - They had fully valeted the car and it looked brand new which was nice, they had filled the tank with diesel which was also most welcome and most importantly the noise has gone!
Went for a drive last night and the car is superb - feels great to be back in it after so long away and really impressed with it once again.
Bad points - The car seems to have an oil leak from the front diff area as the undertrays are wet and oil is coming through and forming in droplets. They have also managed to damage the rear bumper trim around the left hand tailpipe presumably when the exhaust was removed to replace the transfer box!! Not impressed so called the dealers first thing this morning.
Car is going back in tomorrow for bumper repair and oil leak to be investigated.....
On the positive side after speaking with service I spoke to parts and ordered a pair of gloss black BMW Performance grills for it as a treat!
Hopefully will get the car back early next week......

Extremely happy to report that the X5 is still fixed! All quiet and faults now cured so even after the extreme delays we got there in the end.
And after its last 16 week dealer stay I have just received confirmation from BMW that they will provide us with an additional 12 month extended warranty FOC once our current policy expires in September which is a £1,000 result!

...and quite right too!
But a good result in the end and good luck with the car from now on.
