Argh, this has just started happening on my x5 e70 4.0d. I'm trying to fix the issue so I don't give me neighbours a night of pain. Does anybody know where it is located? Can it just be unplugged to stop it from triggering the alarm?

I would suspect it's in the latching mechanism itself.  Have you tried wrapping some tape around the latch bars on the bonnet and closing it?
