Ticking noise on startup and idle

Hi guys,

Been around bmws for a while now, know they have a certain noise when running but the ticking on startup that usually goes away or dies down a hell of a lot has started to hang about on idle, it's had the chains and guides done by the previous owner to which I have pictures of as they broke, but I wondered if the tensioner or the vanos could of gone faulty causing this noise. Any advice on the best way to start checking would be appreciated, it sounds like a tapet noise on idle if that helps
