We have had a good few of the swirl flaps drop of into the engine and damage the engine
This one was the luckiest ever I've seen

We did a swirl flaps delete on the n47 and he was on his way

Hi Jason

I guess it's a fairly common prob on the 2.0d engines did it apply to the 3.0d on a 3 series I.e. 330cd ?

As thinking of one of those for a winter hack/ project

Graeme

I think the E53 with the M57 was the only version without them.  Everything else got them, and all series after with the N57 engine also got them!  I certainly have them on the X6.

I'm no mechanic and dont no much about engines but is that a lot of dried carbon i see in those pics ?? also, wonder what that mileage was on the car in the pics ?? I only use V-Power diesel now so am i right in thinking this prevents a lot off this ?  O:-)

[/quote] all that carbon is thanks to the EGR valve, it diverts exhaust gasses back into the inlet manifold, that's how EGR valves get clogged with carbon.

V power doesn't stop the shoot from the Egr
I can set the Egr so it's closed which keeps the intake manifold cleaner

This car had do around 70,000 miles
But on the N47 2.0d and 2.3d (twin turbo) 4cylinders I've seen them worn at 45,000miles

I have a Bmw x5 e70 3.0d with 100k on the clock. Do I need to worry about the swirl flaps issue?

If it is older than 2009 then YES, get them removed.

BMW stopped fitting swirl flaps late 2008.

Only on the X3?  My 2011MY X6 has something hidden in the inlet manifold and is listed as having 'flap control'.  I don't suppose it is just a single flap to introduce air swirl, rather than one per pot as on earlier models?

I was going by PMW here:

"The BMW diesel engines produced between 2000 and 2008 all have a particular design problem with inlet manifold butterfly flaps (commonly known as swirl flaps)"

http://www.pmwltd.co.uk/pages/bmw-swirl ... ing-plates

and here:

"BMW introduced a modified inlet manifold (with swirl flaps still fitted) trying to address this problem, the spindle of the valve is thicker and stronger, sadly this design is also prone to failure. BMW finally gave up on swirl flaps in late 2008."
