So, here we are in the very north of Italy about to cross into Austria. Up to now we've done about 2400 miles, and we're still 10 days from home.

Yesterday the service indicator dropped from 16000 miles to 500. This morning the iDrive is telling me to get the front brake pads replaced immediately. Well, the pads and discs were done the week before we left, and I reset all the service lights myself at that time.

I've tried resetting again, and the indicator in the dash said "Reset possible", but after it counted-down it said "Reset not performed" or something similar. That was after we had spent half an hour in an Autostrada service area. I'm going to try it again tomorrow morning, but I don't hold-out much hope of it resetting.

Could be something wasn’t plugged back in so it can’t work out how much is left on the pads etc?

Was the wear sensor replaced ? , they can't be reused these days

Actually, it wasn't. I don't fit them in the pads, just tie them out of the way. It's what I've done on all my BMWs. Just having sensors on two pads out of eight is a stupid idea.

Finally got round to sorting it today. Replaced the sensor. Once that was done, I tried again to reset the SI through the instrument cluster. Still no joy. I had to plug my iCarSoft in and clear the fault code. Once that was done, no issues.

I did wonder, afterwards, if I might have just got away with clearing the fault code - but it's too late now. When the same issue happens for the rear pads, which I assume it's likely to do sooner rather than later, I'll try clearing the fault code before fitting a new sensor.
