X5 40d xdrive, how good is it?!

Hello
I have just purchased an X5, 40dxdrive. it has done just 300 miles so far but I am really disappointed by how much of a difference there is between the 37.7 mpg advertised and the 15 to 17.3 mpg I am getting at the moment. I am environmentally conscious and I find it hard to be part of it. I also have a Mercedes CLS 2012 reg and I get between 35 and 37 mpg in town from the first time I bought it which is within range of what the 40mpg advertised. I am really not sure what to make of it. Can anyone suggest anything I can do about it?
Thanks,

Speak to Jason about a remap
Where are you driving cos that does seem a but low......i still get 19mpg with lots of short trips in london.
Then again the best ive got out of it is 27mpg......well off of BMW's figures

What kind of driving are you doing? Town & stop start will not do you any favours.
Don't expect to see averages much above low 30's until it has some miles on it. 37.7 may be the official figures but don't expect that in 'real world' use except on motorways at less than 80mph. Real figures for mine are 27% lower than official. Our Mini is even worse at over 30% different, but still 'normal' when discussed with other owners.
Yours does sound very low. Try resetting the trip computer and see if it's been 'skewed' by the dealer running the engine and not driving off.

Bmw never seem to get near the quoted mpg in my experience, just had a 2012 320d coupe loan car & the combined is meant to be 60 mpg & it was saying 44 mpg on the computer after a 130 mile journey, what hope do you have!
Lovely X5 you have by the way

Thanks, I am actually really surprised as I also own an E class Mercedes CLS 350 CDI which gives me a figure close to what is advertised. My family has grown and I decided to buy a 4x4. I only buy German cars and I have done so for many years. BMW was an obvious choice as I have experience with the brand and I have had 2 series 5 in the past. I feel this X5 40xdrive purchase might be a mistake.
I am not sure if anyone would agree with me that it is a bit unfair from BMW not to provide real figures.
Regards,

correction: I also had an E class before CLS mpg in real life was not too far from what was advertised. Cheers.

Most cars when new never manage their true mpg but will improve as engine some miles on it

Surely you can't worry about mpg having bought a two tonne SUV?
I've got a 335i and that is yet to get over 20mpg, no idea what the X5 does as there are better things to worry about

It will get better..... but if you can afford a new 40d X5 and a newish CLS then a few quid on diesel won't kill you.
Our 35d gets about 28 with mostly town driving.

I will run it for a while and post an update. If BMW cannot give you precise numbers, i say, what is the point of buying German cars then! Anyways thanks to everyone for your comments. Best regards.

My X6 M50d is driven spiritedly <ahem> and still gets me mid 20s even on lead foot days. Wifey has an X5 40d (2012 model) and is getting better mpg than she ever did in her 2009 model Q7 3.0d (which she had for 3 years from new); and she does a lot of crawling in school run traffic. Sounds like you need to reset the counter and try a decent A road or motorway journey or three. An Italian Tune might help clear the old pipes too

They are big old buses and Chelsea tractor usage is never going to give the poor thing a chance to get into its stride.
The point of buying one - and this is my 4th straight BMW - is that they are well engineered driver's cars

How much does your wife get on X5. My CLS is really good, 35 mpg. I guess Merc is just more precise.

Actually what upsets me is I wanted to buy M model but to keep wife happy I bought 40d. I do not mind it if I was doing 10 mpg on M model. I really regret buying it. Thanks to you all for all your comments.
