Hi guys right simple question are there any safety reasons why you shouldn't use winter tyres in the summer? Specifically perelli scorpion ice and snow.

Now for the long reason why.

I have only a small amount of life left in my current summer set (19"sport staggered) and 4/5 mm on my newly acquired winter wheels (thanks tractorjacob) with tyres mentioned above. Which from what I have read here they are pretty good but for where we live out in the sticks I want more of an A/T tyre ( prob go for general grabber at's)

we are heading over to Italy in August and will prob do 2.5/3k which means the current summer set will have to be replaced before we go so do I:

1-Replace summers now and drive to Italy, then replace winters with A/T's in oct putting the scorpions in the shed/eBay or

2-Put the winters on now wear them out over the summer replacing they in oct for A/T's and replace the summers in the spring when the summer wheels go back on.

I am leaning towards 2 as it will spread the cost over 9/10 months instead of 2 sets of tyres in the next 4. Ofcourse only if its safe to do so.

Hi,

if you've got winter wheels and good winter tyre why don't you stick with them this coming winter and see how they go and when they need replacing then get the A/Ts next year.

In meantime get new summer tyres on for your trip to Italy this summer.

That way you will have good tyre for the summer trip, and they will ok for next year as well.

I have the same tyres as my Winter set and I believe they don't start to deteriorate until the average temperatures are above 20C - so given what this (eastern side) of the country has been like they'd be OK.  If it warms up then either limit your mileage or your speed so you don't run out of rubber or grip

well it could be in the high 20's/low 30's and could be doing 2.5/3K during the italy trip but will have a 4 week old baby with us so will be in old man driving mode and will be putting the tyres on just before we go so should be ok.

as i said in my op where i live is very hilly and very muddy and so really need an A/T tyre and couple that with crappy mobile signal its not worth taking the risk of getting stuck as we also get a reasonable amout of snow too



so aside from increased wear rate is there any other safty reasons for not using them in the summer.
