higher revs needed to go to gear 3 and onwards after about 30mins driving

Hi,
I have an X5 E53 4.4 year 2000 automatic . It's started to rev higher to go into gear 3 and above after about 30mins continuous driving . Even if I manually shift it up , it drops back to 3 straight away.Needs loads of revs to get to next gear. Goes down gears fine. First 30 mins or so driving , it's fine.  When I stop and I put in manual to 5 , it jumps back to gear 1 (before I move) , I know it wont work properly. When it is working properly , it jumps to gear 3 at standstill instead of 1 (i am assuming thats normal).
I have had the transmission fluid changed and the filter and software updated.
The fault happens after about 30 mins, maybe the transmission fluid is getting hot.
When I turn engine off for 5-6 mins and then restarting seems ok for a bit, but then starts playing up again.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Regards

Welcome..... :hi:

All I can think of is it is as you suspect temperature related and it could be a pressure problem caused by a sticky solenoid or crud in the shift control hardware, or not enough pressure from the torque converter once it gets up to temperature.

Was the correct fluid type used?  What state was the old oil in?

It almost sounds like it's going into some form of emergency mode as you keep getting 3rd only.... ???

Thanks for you reply Richard.

I am assuming the correct fluid was used and mechanic told me there was not loads of bits in the fluid. I had it done at BMW autotech liverpool.

ps it goes out of gear 3 eventually when enough revs  are reached (4000 revs)

are all your tyres the same size/ make, i just had a problem with my rrs not changing up the gears and it was when i had new wheels they put a tyre that didnt match brsnd wise on the front that was on the rear (id never noticed it was fitted) and the difference in circumfrance was enough to make the car think it was cornering and not change up gears
